Do you cry often? – Η συνέχεια ενός διαλόγου 22 ετών
Do you cry often? (Κλαις συχνά;) Η ερώτηση αυτή πρώτο γράφτηκε επάνω σε μια κακο-ραμμένη σημαία από τον Stefano W. Pasquini το 1995, ενώ ζούσε στο Λονδίνο και αγωνίζονταν να επιβιώσει ως καλλιτέχνης στη μέση της επανάστασης του YBA. Λίγο ήξερε ότι ήταν μάρτυρας μίας επανάστασης στην τέχνη που θα άλλαζε την πορεία της εικαστικής σκηνής στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Καθώς έραβε τη σημαία αυτή – η πρώτη από μια σειρά σημαιών που τον συνόδευε καθ ‘όλη τη διάρκεια της καριέρας του – τον επισκέφθηκε ο συνάδελφός και φίλος του Κώστας Μπασάνος που, ήδη εξοικειωμένος με την πρακτική του ραψίματος (σε πολλά από τα έργα του την εποχή εκείνη χρησιμοποιούσε το ράψιμο), τον βοήθησε στη διαδικασία. Είκοσι-δύο χρόνια αργότερα, Pasquini και Bassanos (που σπούδαζαν παράλληλα στην Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών της Μπολόνια στην Ιταλία στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του ’80) μέσα από το κοινό τους project απευθύνουν την ίδια ερώτηση και στο κοινό, “Κλαις συχνά”? Κλαις καμιά φορά?” Ο Pasquini εξετάζει την ίδια την πράξη του κλάματος και αναλύει τις επιπτώσεις γύρω από την επιδερμική συμπεριφορά που προβάλλεται στα κοινωνικά δίκτυα, με τυπώματα σημαιών προερχόμενα από screenshots από το Periscope και το Instagram. Ο Μπασάνος, στην in situ εγκατάσταση του αμφισβητεί τη βαρύτητα αυτών των συναισθηματικών, φραστικών δηλώσεων που προκύπτουν ως πλασματικές εικόνες αυθύπαρκτων αναμνήσεων στα κοινωνικά δίκτυα.
Ο Κώστας Μπασάνος σπούδασε Γλυπτική στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών Accademia Clementina στη Bologna και MA, PhD στο Winchester School of Art στο Winchester της Μεγ. Βρετανίας. Διδάσκει Γλυπτική στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών του Παν/μίου Ιωαννίνων. Έχει παρουσιάσει τη δουλειά του σε ομαδικές και ατομικές εκθέσεις στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Καλλιτέχνης, επιμελητής και συγγραφέας, ο Stefano W. Pasquini (1969, Μπολόνια, Ιταλία) έχει εκθέσει σε διακεκριμένους χώρους όπως, μεταξύ άλλων, το ICA και το National Portrait Gallery στο Λονδίνο, Art in General (Νέα Υόρκη), MAMbo (Μπολόνια), Κέντρο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης Newhouse (Staten Island, Νέα Υόρκη) και το MACRO (Ρώμη). Έχει δημοσιεύσει πάνω από 500 άρθρα για τη σύγχρονη τέχνη για περιοδικά όπως το New York Arts, Collezioni Edge, Sport & Street, Luxos και πολλά άλλα. Έχει γράψει τα βιβλία Accidental // Coincidental (Newhouse, Νέα Υόρκη, 2008), Incorporeo (με την Maria Teresa Roberto), Albertina Press, Τορίνο, 2015, ELIA – ARTISTA, Apogeo, Adria, 2016, I margini del conflitto (με την Simeone Crispino και Maria Teresa Roberto), Albertina Press, Τορίνο, 2017.
Από το 2013 έως το 2016 ήταν επικεφαλής επιμελητής της γκαλερί Studio Cloud 4 στην Μπολόνια. Είναι συντάκτης του περιοδικού “Obsolete Shit” και διευθύνει το Coxo Spaziale με την Fedra Boscaro, ένα πρόγραμμα για την τέχνη και το θέατρο στο Radio Città Fujiko. Διδάσκει “Special Graphic Techniques” στο Albertina Academy of Fine Arts του Τορίνο. Τα έργα του διατίθενται από τους Enrico Astuni, Bologna, L’Arte, Molinella και Melepere, Βερόνα.

Do you cry often? Is written on a badly sewn flag Stefano W. Pasquini made in 1995, when he was living in London as a struggling artist in the midst of the YBA revolution. Little did he know he was witnessing a sort of art revolution that would change the course of the art scene in the UK. While he was sewing this flag – the first of a series that accompanied him throughout his career – his colleague and friend Kostas Bassanos came to visit, and since he wasn’t new to sewing (many of his artworks at that time made use of sewn fabric) he helped him out in the process. Twenty-two years later Pasquini and Bassanos (who both studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, Italy, in the late 80’s) are collaborating on an exhibition project that lays its foundation on Do you cry often?, assuming, 22 years later, that you – the spectator – cry, every once in a while. Pasquini explores the act of crying on a superficial level by taking under scrutiny the subtle implications around our behavior on social networks, with flag-like prints made out of screenshots from Periscope and Instagram related collages, while Bassanos with an in-situ installation questions the precarious physicality of such textual emotional statements related to the sedimentary imagery that social networks project as self-indulgent memories.
Kostas Bassanos was born in Greece. He studied Sculpture at Accademia Clementina in Bologna (Italy) and MA Sculpture at Winchester School of Art (GB). He holds a PhD from University of Southampton (GB) and he teaches Sculpture at The School of Fine Arts of the University of Ioannina (GR). He lives and works in Athens. Artist, curator and writer, Stefano W. Pasquini (b. 1969, Bologna, Italy) has exhibited in prestigious venues such as, among many others, the ICA and the National Portrait Gallery in London, Art in General (New York), MAMbo (Bologna), Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (Staten Island, NY) and MACRO (Rome). He published over 500 articles on contemporary art for magazines such as New York Arts, Collezioni Edge, Sport & Street, Luxos and many more. From 2013 to 2016 he was head curator of Studio Cloud 4 gallery in Bologna.
